As reported by Spanish outlet Don Balon, Manchester United are the favourites to sign versatile Atletico Madrid player Jose Gimenez this summer, although Liverpool are also in the market to land him.
What’s the story?
Gimenez has struggled for a regular start under Diego Simeone this season but is nonetheless regarded as one of the brightest talents in Europe. Now two of the Premier League’s biggest clubs are set to offer him a fresh start in England.
Don Balon reckon that Manchester United are favourites for his signature but that Jurgen Klopp is also willing to throw his hat into the ring to bring him to Anfield this summer.
While valued by his club at £38m, both clubs are said to be looking for a significant reduction on that fee before biting.
What does he offer?
While primarily a central defender, Gimenez showed his versatile side this weekend when he excelleed in a 3-0 win against Osasuna in the centre of midfield. However, it’s his performances in defence that have likely caught the eye of prospective clubs, helping Atletico to twelve clean sheets in 21 matches so far this season.
At 22 years of age he could be provide a solid defensive option for the next decade should all things go well, a youthful option ready for the first team at the elite level, always a valuable trait.
He’s respected at international level too, having already won 30 caps for a talented Uruguayan side.
There are many upsides to his signature and it’s clear to see why the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United are reported to be willing to end his Atletico Madrid limbo and give him the chance to kickstart his career in the Premier League.
