The Athletic’s Tottenham Hotspur correspondent James Maw says that Gedson Fernandes has not made a major impact since his move to the club in the January transfer window, per The View From The Lane podcast (March 3rd, 4:00).
What’s he said?
Spurs signed Gedson on an initial loan deal from Benfica in the winter window and they have the option to make that move permanent should they so wish.
Thus far, he has made seven appearances for the club, making two starts, one in the Champions League against RB Leipzig and one in the FA Cup versus Southampton.
He has been restricted to cameos in the Premier League, playing a maximum of 15 minutes, against Norwich City.
He is a versatile player, capable of filling in at central midfield, on the right flank and on the left, but Maw does not think he has shown his true potential since his move to north London.
He said: “It seemed like Gedson was mostly playing on the right, but he’s not really a right winger is he? He’s a central midfielder.
“It’s obviously very early days and he’s a young guy, but I’ve not really been particularly convinced.
“He looks like a good player to come on and see out a game rather than come on and change it. He’s not really added that much.”
No clues whatsoever: Which seasons do these iconic Spurs images belong to?
What’s expected?
Gedson is a bit of a weird one.
He was signed by Spurs to plug a hole in the squad but he’s only 21 and has yet to truly grow into the player he could well become.
Clearly, he’s talented, winning two caps for Portugal, while he also played 59 times for Benfica prior to his move.
He has shown tricks and flicks when playing for Spurs but he has not yet been trusted to start in the league and one has to think that next season will be the one where he potentially comes into his own.
As it is, he is simply filling a gap in the squad; there shouldn’t be too many expectations attached to him.
Meanwhile, Spurs have been slammed for a “mess” they have got into.
