Southampton star Charlie Austin is enjoying a strong start to the 2016/17 campaign, with some calling for him to be involved in Gareth Southgate’s next England squad.
Indeed, although the 27-year-old didn’t have much of an impact last season after arriving at St. Mary’s in January, he’s managed four goals in seven Premier League outings so far this term – despite three of them coming from the bench.
And Austin’s fine form in front of goal has forced us at FootballFanCast to ponder his career scoring record – most particularly, the clubs he’s tormented the most.
There’s plenty to choose from, considering Austin’s worked his way up from non-league football, representing Poole Town, Swindon Town, Burnley, QPR and the Saints along the way.
So with that in mind, here’s a rundown of the ten clubs Austin’s found the net against most consistently, ranging from lower tier opposition to those in the Premier League.
10. Burnley – Five Apps, Two Goals, One Assist
Kicking us off are Austin’s former employers Burnley. Two seasons at Turf More bore 41 Championship goals, but the Englishman’s record against the Clarets is equally impressive, contributing to three nets in five outings.
9. West Brom – Two Apps, Four Goals, Two Assists
Austin’s record versus West Brom verges upon incredible, with four goals in just two outings – including a hat-trick for QPR back in December 2014.
8. Derby County – Seven Apps, Five Goals
Derby County fans must dread the sight of Charlie Austin, who boasts a strike rate of better than one-in-two against the Rams. That’s despite not actually scoring past the Championship outfit since Boxing Day 2012.
7. Southampton – Seven Apps, Five Goals
Southampton fans may be somewhat surprised to see their own club on this list, especially considering they’ve been a solid Premier League side since promotion in 2012. However, Austin scored against them consistently in the lower tiers and for QPR during the 2014/15 campaign.
6. Peterborough – Six Apps, Five Goals, One Assist
A consequence of his many years in the Football League, the Southampton striker has played a role in six goals in as many appearances against the Posh. Nicely done.
5. Watford – Six Apps, Five Goals, One Assist
Austin boasts almost exactly the same return against Watford, but failed to find the net when they visited St. Mary’s earlier this season. In fact, none of his six strikes versus the Hornets have come in the Premier League.
4. Leeds United – Seven Apps, Five Goals, Two Assists
It may have taken him more appearances to score the same amount of goals, but Leeds United rank above the aforementioned Peterborough and Watford because of Austin’s two set-ups upon facing the Elland Road outfit.
3. Brighton – Nine Apps, Six Goals
Another club Austin has excelled against, netting six goals in nine outings. That might explain why Brighton have come so close to promotion over the last five years but always somehow missed out.
2. Barnsley – Six Apps, Six Goals
Austin’s scored the same amount of goals against Burnley but in three less appearances – in other words, a 100% record over the Tykes. That includes three goals during the 2013/14 campaign alone.
1. Charlton – Ten Apps, Six Goals, One Assist
Austin has faced no club on this list more times than Charlton Athletic, but the Southampton man’s got the return to match. Indeed, he’s played a part in seven goals against the Addicks, facing them whilst at Swindon, Burnley and QPR.
