Christian Eriksen’s future at Tottenham Hotspur looks to be coming to an end.

The great Danish playmaker’s current contract is due to run out next summer and if Spurs don’t agree to sell him now or don’t negotiate an extension, they risk losing a great player for free.

And a recent report from The Athletic suggests that he does indeed want to leave the club.

But if Eriksen was to leave, either in January or in the summer, Tottenham Hotspur would surely need someone who’s good enough to come in and fill the void of the talented midfielder.

Interestingly enough, there is such a man that was actually on their radar not so long ago, during the 2019 summer transfer window.

Of course, we are talking about Roma’s young prodigy, Nicolo Zaniolo, who’s seemingly emerging onto the scene in the ongoing campaign.

Gazzetta dello Sport previously reported Spurs’ interest in the 20-year-old talent and they were even reported to have bid around €45m (£40m) to land their target in June this year, as stated by Tuttosport (via Calciomercato).

Nearly six months on it’s fair to say that Mourinho would be wise to reignite his club’s interest, up the temperature a bit and go for Zaniolo once again.

So far this season, the youngster has definitely impressed with five goals in a total of 18 games played across all competitions, including two strikes and an assist in the Europa League.

Even though he is still extremely young and very much at the beginning of his career, the 20-year-old has also been capped five times for Italy, scoring twice and grabbing an assist as well.

Of course, Eriksen is a more well-rounded player, being much older than Zaniolo in the first place, but the Italian prodigy has all the time in the world to eclipse the Dane’s contribution at Spurs.

Let’s see if Mourinho decides to roll the dice and go for it in the near future.
