How do you solve a problem like Christian Eriksen? Well, if your name is Jose Mourinho and you’ve just been appointed manager of Tottenham Hotspur, you drop him to the bench and unleash a revamped Dele Alli at London Stadium. If any performance was going to give the Denmark international a push in the right direction then Alli certainly provided it in a fluid number ten role, thriving at the heart of a pulsating front four in a performance that suggested Eriksen may have to watch from the sidelines more often under the new regime. In the aftermath of the Saturday lunchtime fixture, football.london’s Spurs correspondent, Alasdair Gold, posed a question to his Twitter following:
It’s a pertinent question given his contract is due to expire at the end of the season and also the fact his form has been diminishing over an extended period of time.
Within a sea of comments from the Lilywhites faithful lay a transfer suggestion from former Spurs player Graham Roberts, who hinted the club should be using Eriksen as bait to re-sign Gareth Bale.
With the Eriksen to Real Madrid rumours consistently rumbling in the media and Bale’s controversial recent antics on international duty with Wales in mind, it’s easy to understand how Roberts has arrived at this transfer suggestion.
It is rare for two high-profile players to move in opposition directions as part of a swap deal and it would certainly be a surprise if Daniel Levy attempted to bring Bale back to north London in this manner, but current circumstances do point towards a plausibility in Roberts’ suggestion even if it is a touch audacious.
Only time will tell if this is prophetic from Roberts.
